The United Kingdom is no stranger to the vibrant and dynamic culture of the Cape Verde islands, as evidenced by the presence of a large Cape Verdean diaspora. Now, the UK is set to be the third country outside of Africa after Portugal and Netherland to experience the cinematic gems of the archipelago with the launch of the first Cape Verdean movie in the UK. The movie – The Island Poet – was written and directed by Cape Verdean filmmaker, Julio Silva, and is set to be presented in London, at 15 Linton Road, IG11 8HE, Barking and across the nation this summer on the 30th of June and 1st of July 2023.
‘The Island Poet’ tells the story of a Cape Verdean poet who is arrested by political officials a week before Cape Verde Independence. This film is a tribute to all Cape Verdeans who fought underground for the Cape Verde Independence.
The movie, which stars Cape Verdean based actors and producers Julio Silva, is set to be a landmark for Cape Verdean cinema. It will provide audiences with a unique insight into the living experiences of Cape Verdeans before the independence, while showcasing the beauty and culture of the islands. The launch of ‘ The Island Poet is coming and you should not miss this unique opportunity, and have a story to tell to your kids "I was there when our first movie was launch in the United Kingdom".
The African Portuguese Community in the engagement strategy with the diverse communities in the UK
The African Portuguese-speaking community (APSC) in London is a vibrant and diverse group that has made a significant contribution to the city’s cultural and economic life. The community is made up of people from countries such as Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe.

The community is actively engaged in a range of activities to build connections with people from other backgrounds and nationalities. This includes organising language classes and cultural events, hosting forums to discuss social and political issues, and running support networks for those who have recently arrived in the UK. The African Portuguese-speaking community also works to ensure that their voices are heard in the wider community. This includes working with organisations to promote the visibility of their culture and heritage, as well as advocating for their rights and access to services. With many members of the African Portuguese-speaking community facing language barriers and potential discrimination, it is important to ensure that they are able to engage and interact with the wider London community. This includes initiatives such as providing language classes to help bridge the language gap, as well as providing support and advice to those who are new to the city.
